Chimneys built some time ago are often left open to the elements. Whilst all chimneys DO require adequate ventilation from both top and bottom to prevent dampness is is accepted that a cowl for a live appliance or a cap for a disused chimney is the best option to prevent rain and bird ingress whilst providing the ventilation. |
Cowls for gas appliances are absolutely critical. We have swept nests out of gas appliance flues that could have led to fatal consequences for the occupiers due to carbon monoxide poisoning. |
We fit a range of cowls and caps, including those for crown pots and other decorative chimney pots where trying to fit a standard cowl is a poor solution. The vast majority of our cowl work does not require scaffolding making it a cost effective solution to nesting birds and rain ingress.

Please be aware that certain cowls are unsuitable for use with live flues. Chimney sweeps often find inappropriate cowls fitted that place customers at risk of either chimney fires or carbon monoxide poisoning. As some sweeps don't fit cowls we are happy to provide this service, even if we are not your sweep. We would rather you are safe than seek to gain your sweeping business. |
Have a look at your chimney pot. If you have something that looks like this image on a live appliance (so you have smoke coming out of it when you light your fire or stove) than call us straight away. These are called Saddle or Hood Cowls are are the bane of our lives. They are not suitable and are only for ventilation purposes but are fitted to many chimney pots and simply need to come off and be replaced.
